"The retailer has also said the store will create hundreds of jobs and generate $800,000 in tax revenue for Orange County."

That statement is the sole reason the vote went as it did. $$$$$$

That 800,000 dollar has gone up since the first article. It started at 300k, was recently at 500k and now has jumped. Either way the county is going to loose a ton of jobs and the residents will be paying out of pocket to keep up with all the improvements that will be needed with the growth. This is all aside from the destruction to the cultural resources of course. Good luck trying to cross from the Wilderness Exhibit shelter over to Saunders Field in the next few years.
      Thats a bleeding shame.

Apparently the blood of 29,000 dead just wasn't enough to pay for this land. What a terrible loss to the cause of Civil War preservation.

Not a huge fan before, but now I will boycott Wal-Mart completely, drop my wife's Sam's Club membership and avoid Walgreen's as much as possible.

They don't value my sentiments. They don't try to understand my views. They don't respect my ancestors' efforts.

They apparently have no need for me or my potential to buy their products. So be it.

            Such a shameful, dark day.

What he said! I have been done with Wal-Mart for awhile, but I will do my best to encourage others not to shop there.

Jason, I applaud that effort if you decide to do it. I won't be able to join you but if you need money for food, signs or something for this endeavor I would like to help in some way.

This is interesting....I went to the Wal Mart comment page yesterday to speak my mind, which I did:

I realize that this message should not be directed at your location, but rather at Wal-Mart Corporate HQ. However, your feedback submission makes it exceedingly difficult to locate said headquarters (despite claims to the contrary), and therefore it's going to you Supercenter #1.

I've been a lifelong shopper at Wal-Mart - I've always valued the wide selection, the low prices, and the general shoppability of your stores. However, that all changes today. To think that an American company such as this would willingly and persistently fight to place a superstore location at the Wilderness Battlefield in Virginia is shocking. It's deplorable. American history was reshaped during the years 1861-1865 by the Civil War, and yet you make no attempts to even consider placing your store in a less historically sensitive spot within the same region in Orange County, VA. I had hoped that the Board of Supervisors there would use common sense and not allow your company the special use permit required to build your store, but apparently common sense is no longer the rule of the day.

Therefore, you have lost a customer who was - until now - willing to trade you money for goods so that he may do what needs to be done in his life, and so that you may grow your company as you see fit. You have seen that vision poorly, however. Thus, I will exert as much effort as is required to ensure that all I contact see your company as I now do, and implore them to spread the word as well. I aim to hurt your company financially so that you may no longer hurt this country, and this world, culturally.

I hope Target, and Kroger, and Publix, and every small-town store you haven't killed yet has the parking capacity to accomodate their increased business. They're going to need it.

Tonight, they actually replied, which shocks me:

Dear Jonathan, Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We have designed the store so that Wal-Mart will not be seen from the preserved Wilderness Battlefield Park according to our Viewshed analysis. This included placing the store as far to the rear of the site as possible and placing 17 acres, in the area closest to the highway, in a conservation easement as an added buffer.

                          Sincerely,Walmart Customer Care

according to their (Walmart) plan some of the store developement is as close as 50 ft off of Rt 3. Ask them to explain that! That is a long cry from 17 acres.

This one 'bout put me over the edge and I'm not even a big Vermont fan.

                                From one of the Supervisors,
Burkett also took a shot at the Vermont legislature, which early on objected to the Walmart near where soldiers from their state perished in the Battle of the Wilderness. He said he was "pretty sure the only troops that went through there were Yankee deserters."
