    BATTLE OF LEXINGTON MONUMENT

Phelps Camp No. 66, Sons of Union Veterans is seeking donations for a monument to honor the Union participants in the Siege of Lexington (September 12-20, 1861). The monument will be placed on the grounds of the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site in Lexington, Missouri, near the graves of several unknown Federal soldiers and within the Union siege lines.

We hope to have the monument in place by September 2009, the 148th anniversary of the battle. A monument honoring the Missouri State Guard participants in the siege was erected in 2000, but there is still no corresponding memorial for the Federal soldiers from Missouri and Illinois who fought and died there.

The monument will contain a brief description of the battle, a list of the Federal units involved, and the citation for Medal of Honor recipient George H. Palmer of Co. G, 1st Illinois Cavalry.

So far we have raised half of the $5,000 needed to make this a reality. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact me.

    Thanks for your consideration.

    Brother Patrick,

I'm hoping you have petitioned the National office for a grant from the monuments fund? Our annual dues go toward this. Typically Camps receive about $500 for restoring or erecting new monuments, but more is often available if the cause is a good one.

Best of luck. I know the site where you want to place this marker.
