  • Dreyfuss calls attention to neglected battlefields

I found this interesting, not often Hollywood gets involved with CWPT.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss is visiting Washington to draw attention to the condition of the nation's Civil War battlefields.

The actor joined the Civil War Preservation Trust on Wednesday as the group released its annual report on 10 battlefields that it says are deteriorating due to neglect, land development and other threats.

The sites on the list include Gettysburg, Pa.; South Mountain and Monocacy in Maryland; and Cedar Creek, New Market Heights, and Wilderness in Virginia.

Dreyfuss says the Civil War is the most defining event in our history and that preserving its memory will "remind us of, us at our best and us at our worst."

The sites on the list are nominated by the members of the preservation group. Since 1987, the group has saved about 25,000 acres of historic land.

Re: Dreyfuss calls attention to neglected battlefields

Dreyfuss has always had an interest in preservation and it is great to see him continue to take a public role.

Interesting list this year - including natural and man made threats. Sabine Pass has been hammered by hurricanes, and Fort Gaines ditto, but also is simply eroding away. This list is a VERY carefully thought out (and often contentious) effort to put the most emphasis where it will do the most good. Lost causes don't show up, as it is sadly a waste of a slot. To be identified as top 10 makes many things happen. A lot of folks were not happy when Gettysburg showed up due to the Casino, but it worked. Developers normally fear this list, as it threatened to cost them serious money...but now, amid the extreme slump in real estate, CWPT is actually helping with a solution to unload land that may be years from development. Hard times make strange bedfellows, but the carrot and stick effectiveness of CWPT has never been more effective.

If you haven't joined, its only $35 a year...to be part of one of the most cost effective, dedicated and successful organizations in the country. www.civilwar.org

I recall that some time ago - back in the 80's probably, Dreyfuss fell in with some reenactors at an event for the afternoon. Enjoyed himself quite a bit.

Yep, that was one of the Cedar Creeks. I still remember reading the article about it in the old CCG; I still chuckle at the thought of him (as mentioned in the article) gettin' all worked up with excitement, errently shouting "dress right" when in column of somethings, &cet...:D

Sorry though this is a good thing his liberal stances on other things still makes me dislike the man. I guess a broke clock is right twice a day.
