  • A Call to Arms! Monroe Historical Museum slated for Closure

Urgent to all reenactors who enact or study Michigan Regiments! The Monroe Historical Museum is being considered for closure. This museum houses one of the largest collections of original photos, diaries, and memorabilia pertaining to Michigan Troops in the Civil War. It also houses the George Armstrong Custer Collection. We need to stop this from happening. Please write the county board and tell them how valuable the museum is to travel and $$$$$ for the local communities.

Re: Monroe Historical Museum slated for Closure

        Hello Dave,

Post the contact info for everyone that should be contacted. Post the e-mail and snail mail addresses and whatever phone numbers you can. When we had a similar problem recently here in NY with the possible closing of Old Bethpage, the living history community's assistance was a great help in keeping the museum open. we can do it again to keep the Monroe Museum open too. These politicians have to be told over and over that we will not allow them to destroy our Country's history.

When you post the info I will forward it to everyone I know. You might want to start a facebook page as well as that served our needs in saving Old Bethpage too. Good luck, we are behind you.

Re: Monroe Historical Museum slated for Closure

Mr. Prince might have further contact information, but a preliminary Google search relayed the following:

          Monroe County, Michigan Historical Museum
the Museum's "Civil War Letters Collection" as transcribed and available online
the Museum's "Historical Photographs" collection, also available online
Museum newsletters for download in PDF format

The following address is the contact information for the staff archivist in the County Archives portion of the museum itself:

          126 South Monroe
          Street Monroe, MI 48161
          (734) 240- 7787
          chris_kull@monroemi.org

That's all I could dig up, but it's a start.

I sent an e-mail to Mr. Kull asking for him to advise on possible advantageous options as well as a more fleshed out description of the details regarding the consideration of closure.

            Pards,
I just got off the phone with John Gibney the director for Monroe. He needs us to send as many e-mails to him today to save the jobs of several individuals including the asst. Director at the Museum. If they are let go the museum programing will be cut in half as well as the hours of operation. This needs to be done today for this evening meeting! the e-mail address is: mailto:john_gibney@monroemi.org

            Please send your e-mails
            Thanks,
            Dave Prince

Re: Monroe Historical Museum slated for Closure

I recieved the following e-mail from Mr. Kull a few moments ago, but I'll be sending the e-mail Dave posted immediately:

              Dear Corporal Burke:
Thank you for your concern in regards to the Monroe County Historical Museum. At this time there is no talk of the museum closing. Our budget, like many other departments within the county, is being threatened with cuts. This year our curator retired and now another position within the museum may be cut. If this happened, 40% of full time staff would be gone this year. If you have other concerns or questions please let me know.

Re: Monroe Historical Museum slated for Closure

I just send John an e-mail. I have had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he is a great guy to talk local history with.

I hope my response was not to late.
                Respectfully,
