Hope the archeo's and historians stay around-from expierence, nothing a developer or a construction boss hates more than historic human remains turning up on site. My cousin knows the fella that found all this. Pretty cool. My cousin left me a voicemail and said that the police had closed off the area, that the news was out there and it was something big, but didn't know what! This is a great find in one way, but I do hate that this soldier's resting place was disturbed, but at least it wasn't bull dozed, or not yet.[B]Justin Morris[/B]

Hopefully he will be buried with the other Federals from the Battle of Franklin. They were moved to Stones River National Cemetery after the war.

I agree with John, plus the body was found with 6 eagle buttons, so most likely not a sack coat, could have been from a depot jacket though.Lee White

On the news last night, they said that is was probably a Federal soldier that was abushed there when the AOT fell back from Nashville, after the battle. I was born in Franklin and have lived in Franklin, all but 2 years and I don't ever recall hearing stories about any Federals being ambushed at that spot. I have to say, that story didn't sound right to me either. When the AoT retreated, they were in full flight. The location isn't prime for an ambush by either side. At the time of the war, it was an open field.
It may be a garbled story, because the reporters on the local TV news made it sound like the Federals were in retreat.
I believe they were overcoat buttons. No mention of any buckles or other equipment debris being found.Joe SmothermanComment

I had thought that possibly it was a wounded Confederate, wearing a captured overcoat that was trying to get back behind the lines and dropped near that spot and died. They simply burried him where they found him. Of course thats just some of the Cop in me coming out:tounge_sm[B]Justin Morris[/B]

There was a Federal presence in Franklin off and on from 1862 forward, so there could be any number of explanations. Hopefully the state guys will get out there and do some excavations and find enough additional material as to make some sort of informed guess.Joe SmothermanComment

Sorry couldn't help it.. If it were an overcoat that this gentleman was wearing at the time of his death.. wouldn't that overcoat be stripped of him during wartime by Fed Confed and Civy alike? Quality coats were hard to come by. But Yes.. this is all very interesting. I plan on contacting a few folks and maybe view the site in my spare time really soon.
All in all good for preservation & good for Franklin.

Not necessarily. I think the assumption that any material that might have had future use would have been collected is too liberally applied. Whoever buried him may have just wanted to get him in the ground and move on.
