  • Wheeling, WV area: West Virginia Day Open Houses

FWIW, West Virginia Day will have several special events this year, since June 20 falls on a Saturday:
--The new Civil War battle flag collection will open in West Virginia Independence Hall in downtown Wheeling. Two of the flags have already been on display in the second floor hallway if you've been there within the past year or so. http://www.wvculture.org/sites/wvih.html
--Cockayne House will be open for tours. I have no information on whether any of the Civil War letters, uniforms and other memorabilia will be on display yet or not, since work is ongoing there.http://www.cockaynefarm.com/ and an article on former resident John W. Smith, with a detail of a discharge medal, at http://www.cockaynefarm.com/cockayne-ttarticle2.htm
--The Marshall County Historical Society will open their museum and display their large photo collection.

As far as I know and the local media have said, all of these events are free.

    Hallo!

While it is not open to the public, and only partially like its Civil War era appearance, if driving around stop at the McDonald's and have a look at the
"Belle of Wheeling" Lydia Boggs Shepherd Kruger's house.

Also note that Mrs. Shepherd's place (her marriage to Colonel Cruger wasn't a happy one) is now the home of the Osiris Shrine Temple. Those of the Masonic persuasion might find that inquiries at the Shrine office might get them a look-see if the staff thinks it warranted.
