  • Dedication of Union monument in Lexington, Mo.

Phelps Camp No. 66, Sons of Union Veterans will dedicate a new monument honoring the Union participants in the Siege of Lexington on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 2 p.m. The monument will be placed on the grounds of the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site in Lexington, Missouri, near the graves of several unknown Federal soldiers and within the Union siege lines.

A monument honoring the Missouri State Guard participants in the siege was erected in 2000, and now there will be a corresponding memorial for the Federal soldiers from Missouri and Illinois who fought and died there.

The monument will contain a brief description of the battle, a list of the Federal units involved, and the citation for Medal of Honor recipient George H. Palmer of Co. G, 1st Illinois Cavalry.

Invited guests include Congressman Ike Skelton, David Luff (one of Palmer's descendants), Joe Maghe (with his display of original artifacts carried by members of the 23rd Illinois) and representatives from different heritage organizations.

Everyone is invited to attend. We hope to see you there!
