  • Save a tinshop, stop a bridge alternative

We are in the middle of the 106 process in regards to the Milton-Madison bridge project (see http:miltonmadisonbridge.com in Madison, Indiana. Though it is possible the superstructure minimal approach will be used, if a TIGER grant goes through, if it fails it means the destruction of our house and neighborhood. Though not directly related to the Civil War, our building is, the shop dates to 1851, and in the line of fire for a couple of bridge options. Between the age of the building, and the fact that many of your Civil War reproductions are made there with hundred-year old tools :wink_smil, we look forward to your support.

The history of the building (and some others in the neighborhood) is on the blog, read at your leisure, and any comments on the blog in favor of protecting such structures would be appreciated.. http://ferrytofulton.wordpress.com

Would this be an emminant domain situation:angry_smi. ? If so I know a few groups that could help. Not preservationists but anti- emminant domain types.

      Pat,

Have you contacted anyone over at Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation? I'm not sure who the regional rep is for that part of the state- but it might be worth dropping them a note to see what they can do to help work through the Section 106 process with INDOT.

Check out the following link for the appropriate contact information for your part of the state.

      Good luck,

      Dan

It is hard to believe that a town that touts historic structures as much as Madison does, would even consider destruction of them, when there are alternatives for the bridge placement. Pat & Vickie are fighting to save not only their own home & business but neighboring historic structures too. Check out their blog Ferry to Fulton. Fascinating information about early settlers in the area!

I worked on night shift (14 hour shifts) when we core drilled the bridge piers and approaches back in the winter.
