FRANKLIN — Crews are using a crane this afternoon to install a monument at the Rest Haven Cemetery for the unknown soldiers of the Battle of Franklin.
Made of discarded limestone formerly used in the old state Capitol building in Nashville, the monument will be commemorated Oct. 10 with the reburial of the bones of an unidentified soldier discovered along Columbia Avenue this spring.
Members of the city’s Battlefield Task Force are overseeing the creation of the shrine where the body will be buried. The soldier's bones have been kept by state officials.
The Oct. 10 funeral of the solider is expected to draw thousands of visitors to downtown Franklin, including groups of Civil War re-enactors from throughout the U.S.
Construction of the monument was slated to begin at noon today but a malfunction in the crane pushed back the start of work.
Also, the remains will lie “in state” at St Paul’s Episcopal Church at 510 West Main Street in Franklin from 8am, Thursday October 8 until the funeral ceremony at 10am on Saturday. Viewing and visitation hours are 8am-8pm Thursday and Friday, October 8th and 9th.
