  • Franklin Anniversary at the Carter House

Was reading today on the Carter House site, (www.carterhouse1864.com) about the plans for the 145th Anniversary weekend. One item in particular caught my eye so I called for details. Seems as though there's gonna be a two-mile walk from Winsted Hill to the house itself on Monday, 30NOV09. Anyone wanting to take part should arrive at the house @ 3:30pm, then will carpool to the hill site. Walk begins @ 4pm. Ceremony and open house to follow. Other events are planned for the weekend as well. Just interested if anyone here is taking part?

    Cheers!

    John,

They do that march EVERY year. The yahoo factor got to more than I could stand some years ago.

There's also a preservation march planned from Spring Hill to the Carter House. I'm sure some of the fellows will be here soon to give details.

Yeah Joe...I know. They've been doing it for about 20 years in fact. Just took an interest as I recently moved to Franklin and need to get "my CW fix". So perhaps I'll do the walk as the only "period correct" fellar there? :)

I haven't done it in about three years but a couple of times I did a small Federal march as the 24th Wisconsin. We would start from Springhill and arrive at Carter House a couple of hours before the nylon battle flags and then semi-assualt the yahoos ala Opdyke's charge. At midnight I'd get the guys up and retreat across the river to Fort Granger. Marse Craddock also did a CS march one year from Carnton that headed off the circus. Hopefully someone will step up and do something less embarrasing than the standard.

            Marler,

I understand about the "fix", but that isn't going to do it. In fact, it may cause irreparable harm to your psyche.

Really? That march is not to achieve some kind of authentic nirvana. That march is to march where they march at the moment that they marched it. To remind the throngs of people on their way home of what happened. One year that I did it there were only three of us. Really it comes down to a question of motivation. If your motivation is to remember then make the march. If your motivation is to have a civil wargasm then, yeah, stay home.

                    Folks,

The discussion is now about two different things. The South Union Guard fellows are doing something worthwhile. They are "doing something". The walk from Spring Hill to Franklin is not easy, I've done it, and I applaud anyone who tries. To raise money for preservation at the same time is an honorable goal.

The traditional annual "March from Winstead Hill", originally referenced in the initial post, is typically a festival with about a million nylon flags carried by members of several pro-southern organizations. It used to be a reenactor thing, but modern organizations have pretty well taken it over. I have seen, literally, a Confederate battleflag with Lynyrd Skynyrd across the middle of it carried in one of these marches.

I just wanted to be clear what I was criticizing.

I missed last year. The year before the SCV people marched early and the march that stepped off at 4pm was as reverent as it has ever been. Again, if you are there for the old boys then you will have your own experience. The march generally puts the serious minded folks up front which creates a buffer from those there for their own political platforms.

I've only done the Winstead Hill to the Carter House march once. That was a few years ago with Ed Bearss. It was the year that saw the removal of the Pizza Hut to make way for the Cleburne memorial area.

The preservation march sponsored by the South Union Guards has been horrendously under publicized. I received an initial e-mail announcing it quit a while back, but had seen nothing else regarding it, until this thread. I hope that with the short time remaining before their event, they can get the word out, and generate some interest and gather participants.

Andrew, I agree and remember two years ago when just a few of us actually stepped off at four and made the march while the rest of the circus went at noon. Even with four or five of us, it reached me deep.

Anyone looking for the experience of putting some miles under their boots and pushing themselves need to contact one us us about this Preservation March. Good time to honor the Feds that are so often overlooked. Email me or PM me if you have any questions. Money is going to a GREAT cause.
