  • Hazlett brothers grave marker replacement

    All,
I'm sure that a lot of you all have heard of Lt. Charles Hazlett from Battery D, 5th US Artillery. For those who haven't, he is most notable for being in charge of the battery of 10 pdrs. that were willed to the top of Little Round Top by hand to hold off Longstreet's advance. He was killed on the summit of the hill on July 2nd while leaning over General Stephen Weed to hear his dying words. After his death a soldier from his battery said of Lt Hazlett,"He was one of the bravest and best officers I ever served under. He always called us his boys."

Charles was a member of the famed West Point Class of 1861 and was in all of the major battles in the east up to Gettysburg.

Additionally, Charles had an older brother, Captain John Hazlett from the 2nd Ohio Infantry. John was wounded severely at Stones River and subsequently died of his wound three weeks before his brother Charles' passing.

Both of these heroes are buried in my hometown of Zanesville, Ohio within 10 feet from one another. Their gravestones were once elaborate monuments to their service, but they are now virtually unreadable and each are broken into three pieces. Sadly, very few in my community either know or care about these two distinguished vetrans. I am a member of a non profit group of four people that are working very hard to replace these stones. We have been trying to raise the funds for the last four years and are close to achieving our goal. A local bronze sculptor has graciously made bronze castings from the original stones and re-sculpted the ornate artwork and the wording at his cost. These castings are exact replications of the original stones that will be mounted on granite bases similar to those found at many battlefields.

The problem at this point is that we are running out of ideas for finding the remaining money to purchase the granite. Asking for donations is definently not one of my strong points and I understand that these are very hard economic times, but I thought that some of you may share an interest in this project. If anyone has any ideas to help us complete our project or would like to help us out at the re-dedication, ceremony, please contact me.

    Thank You,

    Adam Dickerson

If they are military headstones you should be able to get them replaced at no cost to you by the government. All you need to do is to fill out a form which can be picked up at an American Legion or D.A.V.

Here's a link with some reading on it.
Apply for and manage the VA benefits and services you’ve earned as a Veteran, Servicemember, or family member—like health care, disability, education, and more.

The form is called a VA-40-1330
You can download it from this link:

You might also get in touch with your local Sons of Union Veterans Camp if you need any questions or help with having a re-dedication ceremony and such.

Thanks for the reply Jon. These stones were privately purchased by the family and are about four feet tall. It is my understanding that the government only replaces the standard sized stones.

          Adam,

You may want to contact the SUV Department of Ohio. The Charitable wing of the SUV sponsors projects and may contribute. You can fill out a grant application from an online form.

          Follow this link:

Being an Ohioian, you may want to contact some of the local reenactment units and messes for contributions (Flyers at events help). Also, American Legion and VFW posts may also be a good starting point for asking for contributions. A similar project was accomplished up in Cleveland for the 23rd OVI Memorial at Woodland Cemetary. That was a landscaping and cleaning effort but I believe they raised $2000.00 for all the Boxwood Hedges and stone.

How much money is needed to finish the job by the way?

            Hello,
Have you tried going online and contacting various Civil War preservation groups?

Thanks for the ideas and replies guys. We are within $1000 dollars of having the money raised. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but it really is these days. I haven't tried any online preservation groups because they generally have their own preservation projects going on, however, I will definently contact the SUV.

I forgot to mention our website at muskingumcivilwar.org There are pictures of the stone taken in the 1960's and current pictures of the stone, so you can see the level of deterioration over the years. Please check it out.

Just wanted to say that our group received a nice donation from one of our AC members. It makes me proud to be associated with people who care as much about CW history as I do.

Ohio SUVCW Brothers, where art thou?

C'mon, Buckeyes -- if someone from Ohio was to apply the appropriate leverage, I'll bet the memorials committee (or whatever it's now called) of the National Office of the SUVCW in Harrisburg would pony up most or even all of the remaining dollars needed.

It's my understanding that they have helped fund private projects before, but if a Brother or two did the paperwork, things should go smoothly. Generally, the form says to apply for up to $500 but officers have said at the National Encampment to go ahead and apply for MORE and they will comply if there is additional money in the fund.

These grants are generally disbursed before the National Encampment, but to get this done before the ground freezes, I'll be the committee would move more quickly.

                    Best of Luck,
                    Paul Hadley
Go to http://suvcw.org/id.htm and look for the monument grant application.
