  • Save the 6th NCST Battle Flag

    Compatriots, my name is Robert Conner and I am the 1st Sergeant of Company I, 6th NCST, otherwise known as the Cedar Fork Rifles. Last January we started an initiative to raise funds to conserve the battle flag of the 6th NCST that was captured at Sailer's Creek in 1864, and we need your help. Below is a small description of the flag before it was captured.

    After the 6th returned from the “Valley Campaign” in 1864 which included Monocacy, 3rd Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek, the 6th Regiment was issued this flag.

    This flag was issued by the Richmond Depot and was a sub variant of its bunting battle flag. This type of battle flag was a sixth-issue flag, and was distributed to those regiments which had lost their flag while fighting in the Valley. In the spring of 1865, the Sixth had left the trenches of Petersburg and was heading west with the remnants of the Army of Northern Virginia. On April 6, 1865 the 6th Regiment was battling Union Forces at Sailor’s Creek, Virginia. This flag was captured at that battle. The flag was captured by Pvt. James, or Joseph Kimball, (both names have been listed) of Company B, of the 2nd West Virginia Volunteer Cavalry, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Cavalry Division, General G. A. Custer, Commanding. The flag was returned to the State of North Carolina by the United States Government Ordinance Office on February 25, 1905.

    Late last year we asked the NC Museum of History that this flag be sent to the conservationists for estimate when the flag of the 58th NC, courtesy of our sister unit the 26th NC, was sent to be preserved. The official cost of the flag is $6,458.00 of which we now have $1500 raised. If you would like to contribute to this cause, please mail your donations to;

    Mr. Heyward McKinney,
    Budget Officer
    N.C. Museum of History Associates
    5 East Edenton St.
    Raleigh, NC 27601-1011

    Please make sure to indicate in the memo line of checks, or insert a small note if giving cash, that this is for the 6th NC Flag, they will know who it is for. This flag has not been seen by the public in 105 years so lets bring it out for the world to see.

    I'd like to personally and publicly thank forum member gburg for his generous donation, sent to me this week, which I will be forwarding to Mr McKinney in the coming days.

    The flag Mr. Conner describes I have seen and lightly touched and it is a special article in need of TLC and future display. Thanks for anything you can contribute.

      Re: Save the 6th NCST Battle Flag

      That is correct, this past January we had the opportunity to see this flag in person, and aside from museum staff, we were the first members of the public to have seen it since 1905. The flag itself only saw about 6 months worth of service before it, along with the rest of the regiment, was captured at the debacle at Sailer's Creek. As such it is still in very good shape and the color is absolutely amazing. To this day I have not seen a battle flag that is as vibrant a shade of red as this one and those that have seen it will say the same.

        Rob thats such a nice flag for the condition that its in. Notice the one star thats missing, somebody's personal memento perhaps? I'l be sending a contribution shortly, and I'l bring it up at our unit meeting.

          It is in good shape, most likely attributed to the fact that it was only carried for about six months before it was captured. There are one or two smaller holes that look like either bullet holes or shrapnel hits. We believe the missing star was most likely taken by its captor, Joseph Kimball. We don't know for certain but it's likely that's where it ended up.

          Thanks for the support.

            Re: Save the 6th NCST Battle Flag

            In December, Co. I, Sixth NCST completed it's fund-raising efforts and the regimental battle flag is now at the conservator. It is expected to be returned to the Museum of History by the end of the year. Thanks to all who contributed to the fund!
