    Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

After looking at the link Dusty posted, I think that gets us the best return on every dollar donated. that gets my vote.

      Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

I receive CWPT requests often and do my best to help. I agree Gettysburg is high-profile and the doorway to the world for the War. There will be those with checkbooks larger than ours that will step up. I am in agreement with the concept of the 'little man' in Pickett's Mill and donating there.

I was thinking maybe the CrossKeys battle field near Harrisonburg Va. They have always been in danger of being taken over by JMU. I don't know just a thought.

          Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

Our unit supports Johnson Island Prison in Lake Erie so normally I would suggest that we donate the money to that cause. However this year they are set to pay off the mortgage on the property and while I'm very partial to that cause I think the money could be used better elsewhere.

I very much like the idea of splitting the money up and donating to more than one cause. One of the Gettysburg projects is an ideal opportunity to make the money we give count for more. With the $5 to $1 match on the money you can't go wrong there.
Holt House at Franklin is a $6.33 to $1.00 match making a donation there also a very productive way to send money. They only need $150,000 for the 1.07 acres they want to purchase.

I have a soft spot in my heart for New Orleans and Memorial Hall. I lived in New Orleans for 3 years and drove past the building on Camp Street hundreds of times. It's a fascinating building with the second largest collection of Confederate memorabilia in the world. After a $650,000 lawsuit which they lost against the University of New Orleans, they are desperately hurting for money. But... they are not backed by the CWPT. If we are going to send money someplace other than CWPT, I would recommend this worthy cause.

Thanks for listening, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I feel a donation to CWPT would be in our best interest. They would be able, I think ,to decide where best to use $500.00.

                Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

There are hundreds of civil war related sites that are being threatened with budget cuts these last few years. The fact that they are being threatened means that they have, to some extent been preserved all ready.
Personally, I think the money should go toward saving land from development before it is to late to do so.
But which field? Everywhere you look there are CW significant sites under the threat of "the plow" . Each and every one of us has our own "pet" project or place that we would like to see helped or saved so.... Donate the money to CWPT and get a 1-5 or 1-7 Bang for the buck, then go out and donate your time and or money to site nearest you. Just my thoughts on the subject

                  Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

The CWPT is certainly a good option and has a number of sites that they have projects going on for - Franklin being one of them.

Perhaps a poll needs to be set up and the top vote getter gets the funds?

Casino or GB Visitors Center - only difference is there will be slots in the Casino and probably more exhibits.

I really don't want to contribute to GB any longer. My vote is where ever we can get the most matching funds.

                      Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

The CWPT does have the benefit of increasing the dollar value of the donation. They also, like many charities, have the nasty habit of spending much of the donation money on mail outs asking for more money.

                          Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

Of course, I may be biased because of my affiliation, however in my heart I would always choose Historic Fort Wayne Detroit.

I feel terrible not wanting to bandwagon and shout "battlefield! battlefield!" when choosing a location which to make a donation. I have read other posts and agree that there are SO many places in need of money - especially many neglected ones that aren't "tourist meccas" that don't/can't generate large amounts of money independently or via the government.

I don't feel right suggesting something like Fort Wayne Detroit either because it is state specific and unknown to many. But I feel it necessary to at least through this wonderful, obscure place out there for consideration. It was a Camp of Instruction during the Civil War for Michigan troops, housing the 19th U.S. Infantry and served faithfully through Viet Nam. Montgomery Meigs designed it as a Captain of Engineers in the 1840's to defend the northern frontier. Even Silas Casey was stationed there post war in 1865 with the 4th U.S.

It is easy to throw money at G'burg or Antietam because of their name and history. Certainly not to say they are not deserving. Perhaps a list of multiple, smaller places in need of funding and donate a portion to each. Granted, the individual donation might not be large or significant; Though I can only speculate that money to a smaller location is worth more in preservation value than money to a major, Federally backed battlefield.

Ok - off my soap box. Even if this suggestion is completely without merit to many who do not know about Fort Wayne Detroit, please check out the link below in my sig line for the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition. The HFWC is a preservation group dedicated to the physical restoration and advocacy of Historic Fort Wayne Detroit.

Thanks for entertaining my suggestion. Don't beat me up too badly about this as if I had all the money in the world, every historical place in need of money would be cared for.

P.S. Historic Fort Wayne will be the site for "Disaffected in Canada", sponsored by the Sally Port Mess in Michigan - Registration ends soon!

The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond is in need of some timely assistance.

Perhaps they should be a candidate for recipient.

My vote would be send the money to Picketts Mill. As other posters have stated it is sorely under funded and I am sure that the money would be put to good use.
