    Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

With the economy continuing to struggle, state governments are finding it hard to fund their budgets because of a decline in revenues. A number of states in past years have been setting aside some money in those budgets for the preservation of Civil War battle flags in their possession. Sadly, the tough times have caused some states to shut down funding for flag restoration -- Ohio being just one of them, I believe. I'd like to see some state's flag preservation effort benefit from an infusion of $500. But if we absolutely, positively have to give it to battlefield preservation, I say invest in the West. Thanks for taking the time to consider my 2 cents.

I suggest Save The Franklin Battlefield, Franklin, Tennessee. This Gettysburg of the West needs all the help it can muster to save what little remians of this important western battle. The place where Union General Jacob Cox distinguished himself, Where Opdyke's Tigers saved the day and where confederate General Patrick Cleburne fell. http://www.franklin-stfb.org

Confederate Memorial Hall in New Orleans, LA. They are still hurting from the lawsuit a few years back and the downfall of tourism from Hurrican Katrina and could use any donation. Just my 2 cents.

          Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

I think there are plenty of others in the Gettysburg fight that are providing funds and political clout and it can get more because it is so well known.

I would support a donation to Pickett's Mill as a second choice since they are certainly under the gun budget wise but it is there and is preserved for the moment.

As a first choice I would suggest one of the organizations working to save land at Franklin. This battlefield has had so much encroachment that it is a crying shame the condition it is in today. This is where an entire army, not just a division, made a heroic attack across open ground and suffered horribly, yet there is little left.

Here is an option worth looking into. It has a little East, a little West and matching funds turning our $500.00 into $3,675.00.

I would also vote for Franklin, especially right now when they will doubtless need cleanup money.

                Re: Upcoming CW Preservation Donation

I believe Gettysburg has plenty of groups fighting for it. It, perhaps, gets more than it's fair share. Gettysburg is certainly important but no more so than Franklin or Pickett's Mill. I could be slightly biased having been born in Georgia and lived here all my life. Marse Robert and the ANV have received the lion's share of writing in the history books and their battlefields seem to take precedence over the Army of Tennessee's battlefields in preservation. This is just my humble opinion.
I would vote for the money going to Franklin or possibly being split between Franklin and Pickett's Mill.

I am of the opinion that one of two options be determined. Any contribution to a major "at risk" battlefield like Gettysburg should be made to CWPT where the matching funds greatly expand the value of the donation. Otherwise, I would agree that smaller but significant parks like Pickett's Mill would be greatly benefited by the donation and certainly extremely grateful! Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the LH there in June but hope there is a strong turnout!

                        Dusty

I think that's a fabulous plan. A true three-in-one with plenty of matching funds. And through a known well administered conduit-the CWPT-truely the best of worlds!!

Alternately, move the donation even farther West. Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge.....yes selfishly I'd rather see it at Picketts Mill or Confederate Memorial Hall, but let's be fair here......

And sadly, I think the No Casino fight is a Lost Cause. Yes, I've donated, written letters, and such like. The reality is, the Casino forces are too well funded and will continue to peck away, until folks are too exhausted to fight. I guess I liken it to the little town I grew up in. All my life there have been 'wet-dry' elections, with all the signs, retoric and hard feelings between neighbors that go with such. Each time the margin was closer, and it finally tipped over two years ago. The litigation is simply different now, and we still have not seen the 'benefits'. But it's done, and at least are now focusing on building some softball fields. Point is though, we spent the last fifty years fighting over whether the Quickie Mart could sell beer. Different moral issue, same outcome.

I would like to suggest a donation to the National Civil War Life Foundation. We have an excellent collection of artifacts related to both Civil War Soldiers and Civilians. I know battlefield preservation is always high on the list for donations, but don't forget museums. We have the responsibility of preserving and displaying original artifacts that hep tell the story of the soldiers in the war. We are currently trying to raise funds to match a 150,000 grant from the Institute for Museums and Library Services. These funds will be used to design new exhibits for our museum in Fredericksburg, VA. Currently Fredericksburg has no museum that adequately tells the story of the common soldier. Please feel free to visit our foundation web site www.civilwarlife.org. Lets not forget that there is more to preservation than just dirt and grass. It should also include the priceless artifacts that "saw the elephant". I am the director of the National Civil War Life Foundation and I can be reached at 540-834-1850 or at civilwarlife@yahoo.com Thank you for your consideration.

Due to your subscriptions here on the AC, which have kept our site going almost seamlessly the last two years, we've been able to also raise a great deal of money on behalf of CW Preservation. We're now ready to make another $500 donation.

I know we all have our pet projects - and we can't do all of them. But $500 is enough though to have an impact somewhere.

I know Gettysburg gets a great deal of attention - but with this new Casino fight, I can't help but think this would be timely to that cause.

Please share your thoughts and if you think there is a better choice than Gettysburg - let me know. Let's remember this is about the battlefields though - not about personalities.

I would like to see it go towards endangered or neglected battlefields that will put the $500 to good use. I think Gettysburg maybe a lost cause, I know a few business people in the local area, and this could go either way, there is already a lot of money invested on both sides, the $500 would have more value being applied to Franklin or Picketts Mill, I like the suggestion of Mr Chapman as well.

I'd like to see the money go to the CWPT Reams Station/Glendale/Davis Bridge donation campaign. It's a $7:$1 match, which is huge.
