  • Flooding at Fort Donelson Dover, TN May 3,2010

    Hello all,
The Surrender House at the Fort Donelson is about 5 feet from being flooded by Cumberland River . The house has an eathern berm that was built in the 1980's protecting it for now . Water levels are still rising with water coming from Nashville and Clarksville . Dams upsteam are having to let water go ,but according to the news the water will be coming over the top anyway. I was down there about 11am and will be back there tomorrow as long as they don't close the roads leading to the Fort.

The Fort it's self is fine, but the storage areas near one of the creeks has had to move some equipment.

    Jerry,

According to the Corp of Engineers, the Cumberland is supposed to crest some time today. If that is the case, maybe it will miss it by inches.
What a mess it is down here. Record rains!

    Thanks for the heads up.

this is what happens when you mess with mother nature and not leave the damn rivers alone, instead of "engineering" them. Hope all is OK, my dad lives in TN and luckily on a high piece of ground. This sounds like a big wet, deadly mess. Hope all your guard units are not overseas. Keep that boat handy.

          Jerry,

An update that I heard a bit ago from the mayor of Clarksville is that the Corp of Eng report to her had gone up to 59 feet, then to 62 feet and now an astounding 65 feet or more over flood stage!! If that is the case, I do not see how the Surrender House can escape it. I know that it pales in comparison to the loss of life that has occured, but it is still so sad.........

I have to go back to Fort Donelson in the Morning and will report more and maybe take some pictures . Yes, Middle Tennessee has been hammered with water and loss of life. Water rescue equipment with its sirens on are heading towards Dover as it passes my house as I type this .

All the water but in the wrong place. Our farmers in California need it (never mind the Southern California swimming pools). Our rivers need it for the salmon run too.

I hope the TN State Museum is OK. They've got the 1st Tenn Inf flag (Sam Watkins' unit) there.

The Surrender House has water in the basement. The park is pumping the water our over the earthen wall . The wall has not overflowed, but the water is from seepage through the wall.I will try to post pictures tonight.

Keep us posted. Perhaps we can gather a cleaning crew when needed?

I hope these pictures of the flooding come through. They were taken on Tuesday and it may have changed. The River Crested Wednesday night in Clarksville.
Clarksville is 30 miles from Dover.
