Washington County is considering a proposal that could bring more recognition to the Civil War Battle of South Mountain.
The county commissioners could vote Tuesday on whether to recommend that three battlefields on the mountain be added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The listings would bring more attention to the sites and make their private property owners eligible for tax breaks for rehabilitating historic buildings.
A staff survey found that 81 percent of the property owners who expressed a preference were in favor of seeking the special status for Turner's Gap, Fox's Gap and Crampton's Gap.
At least 4,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or declared missing in action on South Mountain on Sept. 14, 1862.
