"God hasten the day when war shall cease, when slavery shall be blotted from the face of the earth, and when, instead of destruction and desolation, peace, prosperity, liberty, and virtue shall rule the earth!"--John C. Brock, Commissary Sergeant, 43d United States Colored Troops

Too bad about Wilder's organization. As far as the idea of slavery museums, it's about 150 years overdue. I look forward to Virginia getting something going -- after all, that's where it all started. I remember my own reaction as an adult to a visit to Mount Vernon: as I listened to the docent at the time talking about how George Washington "built" this or that I had a sudden epiphany. He "built" precious little himself. Most of the grand mansions I'd visited on field trips as a student in Virginia had been built by slaves. The lash is part of the story, but another perhaps more compelling part is the contribution and the creativity of these vital and vibrant people. In a hobby that prides itself on "honoring" our past, we should all welcome an opportunity to honor those whose labor built so much of it. Thanks for sharing this, Emmanuel.

Creative people certainly! Southern cooking would not be as delicious as it is without he contributions of the slave cooks!
