Free history program, band concert at Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center

Gettysburg, Pa. (July 13, 2010) — The Gettysburg Foundation invites the public to upcoming programs at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, 1195 Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg. A “Guns at Gettysburg” program will be offered on Saturday, July 17, and the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment Band will perform on Monday, July 19. Both events are free.
The “Guns at Gettysburg” program will be presented by Larry Keener-Farley, president of the Camp Curtin Historical Society and Civil War Round Table of Harrisburg, Pa. This program will be held in the group lobby of the Museum and Visitor Center and will be offered to visitors throughout the day on Saturday, July 17.
On Monday, July 19, members of the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment Band will perform a public concert at 2:30 p.m. at Ranger Program Site 3, outside the Museum and Visitor Center. The band was re-created in 1996 by musicians from Central Illinois and is an authentic re-enactment of the actual Civil War-era band that was formed at State Normal University in 1861. Inspired by its namesake, the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment band features members recruited from the same geographical area in Illinois.
In addition to these two programs at the park’s Museum and Visitor Center, visitors are also invited to the Rupp House History Center, 451 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, to examine Civil War-era uniforms, arms and equipment with living historian Kyle Pfalzer. The display of military items will be available on Friday, July 16, from 4 – 7 p.m. and on Saturday, July 17 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the side lawn of the Rupp House.

All of these special events complement the Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience at the Museum and Visitor Center, featuring the Cyclorama – the nation’s largest painting. The experience includes the Morgan Freeman-narrated film, A New Birth of Freedom, and the Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War.
