  • Any interest in a preservation march in Williamsburg (May 5, 2012)

The City of Williamsburg, York County, James City County, Colonial Williamsburg and the National Park Service are thinking of hosting a preservation march with both a CS and US route.

I'm trying to get a feel for how many of you guys would be interested in such an endeavor.

    The Skinny:

Confederates would camp in Yorktown Friday night, then Saturday morning March along the Colonial Parkway, stop at Ft. MacGruder, then end up camping Saturday night in Colonial Williamsburg. (about 13 miles total)

Federals would camp on Jamestown Island Friday night, then Saturday morning March along the Colonial Parkway, stop at Redoubt Park, then end up camping Saturday night in Colonial Williamsburg or William and Mary College. (about 12 miles total)

Anyway, this is in the planning stages now, but wanted to see if there was interest. Gimme your thoughts on this, if there is no interest, I won't bother, but if you think we can get 75-100 on each side, I'll make it happen for ya'll (and for preservation)

HEY: CAN ONE OF YOU MODERATORS CHANGE THE DATE TO 2012 INSTEAD OF 2010..I GOOFED ON THE YEAR OF THIS EVENT!

Yes. Defiantly. Especially with the potential loss of the remainder of the battlefield, sounds like a good idea to remember a forgotten fight.

Someone had asked why we're not moving the Feds from Yorktown to Williamsburg and the Confeds from Jamestown to Williamsburg,

Our thinking is to have the Confeds pass by Ft. MacGruder and the only way to do that is have the Confeds start from Yorktown...

I've never been on a preservation march and would be up for this one. Williamsburg is a great place I've always wanted to see again. ~Gary

I'm down, but only if I can manage to finish "Defend this Old Town: Williamsburg during the Civil War" by Carol Dubbs. A great read!

                CJ,
I would be interested in doing this and I think I sent you an email about this before. My big question would be if the organizers would allow horses. I would like to make the march and camp in Williamsburg, but didn't know if it would be horse friendly.

I'd be down for it if the scheduling works for me then. This post needs a poll.

Civil War history at Williamsburg?!?! Does CW know about this?!

Any general ideas on what, if any, units will be portrayed?
