  • Wilkinson Pike widening and rezoning at Stones River battlefield

I do not know exactly what is going on but it appears that the City of Murfreesboro is going to widen and "improve" the Wilkinson Pike at Stones River. The City of Murfressboro has been shameless in their destruction of the battlefield.

From what I hear they are going to widen the Wilkinson Pike to three lanes. Also they are rezoning serveral parcels of land to office general/residential. I think that those parcels are located to the west of the battlefield. Preserving the Wilkinson Pike was part of the reasoning in building Medical Center Parkway which cut through Sill Ridge.

The Wilkinson Pike was one of Gen. Phil Sheridan positions during the battle. And it is one of the most historical roads in the country.

Murfreesboro is just one sad tale after another. I sadly remember going there 10 years ago and still being able to look out over those fields where Sheridan fought and now...well you get to look at a strip mall. Worst of all there seems to be no interest on a national preservation level to do anything about it.
