For all those returning from the "Return to Manassas" event this past weekend, I highly encourage people to match their registration fee to save the actual battlefield.
We had people travel from across the country to attend this event and fall in our ranks. Some of us spent time digging up research on the units we were portraying. What about the hours of sewing? And of course, there's the logistical preparation that happens for any weekend event (both by individuals and event organizers). All this time and effort to accurately recreate a scenario of past days...
Well, I found it co-incidental that the Civil War Preservation Trust sent out an e-mail the Friday of the event, in an effort to save 10 acres of the original battlefield. They will match your contributions 10:1. Wow.
I wonder what future generations will remember of the past if it's not there to physically see. Will they perhaps only be reenacting reenactments? I hope not.
