The Civil War Dance Foundation and its performing troupe, the Victorian Dance Ensemble, is pleased to announce that it recently donated $4,000 to six organizations for Civil War preservation and education programs:
$1,000 - Civil War Preservation Trust
The CWPT is the largest Civil War preservation organization in the nation. Its primary focus is to buy land or easements that will save historically significant land from development.
$1,000 - Harpers Ferry National Park
Harpers Ferry was the site of the U.S. Armory that was attacked by John Brown in 1859. During the Civil War, the town changed hands several times. The donation will be used to fund living history and educational programming at the Park.
$500 - Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters
This house in Winchester, Virginia, was used by Gen. Jackson during the winter of 1861-62. It contains a large collection of Jackson memorabilia. It is one of several historic sites administered by the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society.
$500 - Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania
This organization conducts the Dedication Day activities in Gettysburg, with a major national speaker in the National Cemetery on the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. Each year, they also conduct a nationwide essay contest for high school students on “What the Gettysburg Address Means to Me.” The donation will be used to fund the essay contest.
$500 - Cooper’s Battery B Capstone Project
This is a project to replace the capstone on the Battery’s monument at Gettysburg. The inscription has worn away over the last century and is unreadable.
$500 - Pennsylvania Muster Rolls Project
The Pennsylvania State Archives needs funds to save 900 of the most severely deteriorated muster rolls. This project will clean, repair and conserve the original muster rolls of Pennsylvania’s Civil War regiments.
Each year, our dancers select organizations and causes to help support preservation and education efforts. We are very pleased to make donations to these worthy organizations to help them preserve our history.
With this year’s donations, the direct donations from our treasury has now reached over $31,000 since the group began making donations in 2001.
Additionally, the CWDF’s balls and dance demonstrations have helped other organizations raise over $100,000 for preservation and education.
The Foundation is an all volunteer organization. No one is paid and all performance fees earned by the group are used to support its grant program and upcoming educational video production.
The Victorian Dance Ensemble, founded in 1995, has over fifty members from six states, and presents about three dozen public programs each year. It has presented dance demonstrations for the Smithsonian Institution, National Park Service at Arlington House, Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry and Hampton Mansion, Maryland Historical Society, Pennsylvania State Museum, National Civil War Museum, Washington’s National Theatre, Whitaker Performing Arts Center, Pamplin Park, Museum of the Cape Fear and numerous other historical organizations and sites.
The group is best known for conducting the National Civil War Ball on Remembrance Day in Gettysburg and the Civil War Preservation Ball in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building.
We encourage everyone to support events that make a substantial donation to preservation.
