"Peter Kurtze, National Register Administrator at the Maryland Historical Trust, notified us that the South Mountain Battlefields (Crampton’s, Turner’s, and Fox’s Gaps) were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on Jan. 12, 2011. This finalizes a multiple-year effort by the Department of Natural Resources, the Friends of South Mountain Battlefield, and many individuals to achieve the listing. The listing facilitates, among other benefits, partnerships with the National Park Service, local jurisdictions, and non-profit organizations to conserve the historical, scenic, and recreational character of the battlefield. South Mountain joins Monocacy National Battlefield and Antietam National Battlefield, listed on the Register in 1973 and 1966, respectively."
