What: Colonel Robert S. Robertson House

Where: 635 W. Berry St. Fort Wayne, Indiana

    Threat: Demolition

A friend in Fort Wayne, Indiana contacted me about a preservation issue there. One of their historic downtown churches, Trinity Episcopal (a designated local landmark and in an National Register listed district) was recently gifted two buildings next to its church building. The building right next to the church is a 1960s or so commercial building, but the building next to it (and on a corner) is the former home of Col. Robert S. Robertson, a Civil War officer, Medal of Honor recipient and former Lt. Governor of Indiana (for 2 years in the mid-late 1880s). The church has agreed to give the house to Fort Wayne's historic preservation organization, ARCH, to be moved-but was only given several weeks to do so. Furthermore, there are no funds to move the house. While the house has lost most of its historic integrity, its association with an important historic community figure should be recognized. It is hoped that the church will recognize this and find an appropriate use for this structure, especially during this first year of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

Robertson served in the 93rd New York Infantry. A wartime photograph of him can be found here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/8026096@N04/2917740007/

You can write and express your support for the preservation of this structure to:

Trinity Episcopal Church, 611 W. Berry St., Fort Wayne, 46802 (Rev. Dr. Thomas P. Hansen).

    Thanks!

Just curious what the date on the house is...the house appears to have undergone quite a facelift (i.e. modern windows, asphalt composite roof...etc.).

Yeah, as I mentioned-the house has essentially lost its historic integrity. There might have been an Italianate under all that. I'm not certain of the exact construction though.

      UPDATE
Unfortunately the church decided they couldn't wait. Reportedly, over the weekend they offered 120 days to work with ARCH on this issue. However, I was just told the front facade had been torn down this evening.

As of May 31, the whole house has been torn down. Usual for Fort Wayne - Historic Building=future parking lot.
