  • Stafford County, VA Civil War Park

THe Final pieces are in place and funding has been secured. The county BOS (Board of Supervisors) approved the "Stafford County Civil War Park". Although no battles were ever fought here, it is a unique place. Elements of the AOP 11th Corps wintered over here during 62-63. Soldiers built roads and earthworks to protect the US supply lines from Aquia landing to Falmouth (opposite Fredericksburg across the Rappahanock river). The park will consist of 3 intact artillery emplacements, a cordoroy road that has been escavated and winter camps.

Re: Stafford County, VA Civil War Park

I moved last month from one location in Stafford (about a mile from my old place) to a new one. About one week after we moved, we saw the corps of Engineers trucks and equipment traveling to and from the end of my road. This is a dead-end cul-de-sac that had been totally blocked off with no trespassing signs etc. I got the courage up to walk my dogs down the road and talked with the VA guard guys that were camped down there. Turns out it's the very project you're speaking of. There was never any notice of when and where this park was being built. I don;t understand why the county would be so hush-hush about the whole thing. But the plan for the park is incredible. There are the remnants of Union winter quarters (post-Fredericksburg), a corduroy road, and 2 union gun emplacements to guard the approaches to Aquia Landing (which is about 4 miles down the road). All-in-all, a very interesting, non-battle-related project that the county, in conjunction with the VA Guard, are putting together at an unbelievably low cost. Kudo's to everyone involved. I'm hoping to volunteer some of my own time into the project.

Possibly the big SECRET was to guard against relic hunters or any other type of activity that might disturb the integrity of the site. ~Gary

If I were to hazard a guess, DP has already been here and searched the place for relics. DP Newton is the "Friends of Stafford Civil War Sites" President and owner/operator of the White Oak Museum in South Stafford county where he has displays of numerous relics he and his relic hunting friends have dug out of Stafford county Civil War sites. I like DP and he's a great guy but that honey hole is probably hunted out.
