  • 4th Ohio Monument at East Cemetary Hill

Some of us in Ohio & Gettysburg have been looking forward to the restoration of the Fourth Ohio Monument on East Cemetary Hill. However, once again another driver strikes and destroys a piece of our Civil War Heritage.

Plans are currently in the works to restore the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Monument on East Cemetary Hill. This will include the stabilization of the base, installation of an support armature for the inside of the monument and re-installing the original obelisk shaped top with Soldier.

This monument is made form a zinc alkloy that is cast to resemble carved stone.

Now, March 4, 2004, yet another inattentive driver comes along and plows into another precious Gettysburg monument. I have attached infomation sent to me released by the GNMP showing photos and information in reference to this most recent "Automobile Vs. Monument" crash. (There are no such things as accidents when it comes to motorized vehicles) The only saving grace, if there is one...is the fact that the driver only struck the right flank marker of the 4th Ohio...as opposed to the main monument.

Here is a look at the article:

Pickup Truck Hits Gettysburg Monument and Granite Posts on East Cemetery
    Hill

At approximately 2:30 p.m. March 4, 2004, the driver of a Ford pickup truck
collided with a civil war monument and two granite fence posts on the
Gettysburg battlefield at East Cemetery Hill.

The driver was travelling northbound on Baltimore Pike and lost control of
the vehicle in front of the Evergreen Cemetery. The truck swerved off the
east edge of the roadway, continued approximately 150 feet in a northerly
direction and struck the Fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry Right Flank Marker
and two granite fence posts within Gettysburg National Military Park. The
1887 monument is about 2 feet high, is composed of a zinc alloy cast to
resemble carved stone, and was severely damaged. Two granite fence posts
were uprooted from their concrete anchors but received minimal damage.

The driver had no passengers and was not injured. Preliminary National Park
Service cost estimates for the damage are between $5000 and $10,000,
including a complete recasting of the zinc monument which cannot be
repaired. Gettysburg Borough Police Department is the investigating
    agency and charges are pending.

This is the third time since October 2003 that a vehicle has struck and
damaged a monument or cannon carriage within Gettysburg National Military
    Park.

Here is the other picture supplied with the original press release.

It should be interesting to see the completed crash investigation to see the cause of the crash. The roadway is a straight grade, and the marker is set along the military crest of the hill. Who or what caused the operator to "Fail to Maintain Control" of his vehicle and swerve off of a straight road....will have to wait and see what the police report says.

Zinc is the same metal that our old Hotwheels and Matchbox cars are cast in.
Sadly, It is a difficult, if not damn near impossible metal to rework and weld.
I'll send my spare change to to have the marker conserved or replaced when that comes to pass...

        Todd,
Thats a real bite. Sorry to hear about the marker. I have stood there many times looking at the the monument and markers for the 4th. I would like to venture out when the monument is rededicated. If you are putting together a group, I will gladly fall in.

          Rick,

Once I get some more info about the monument and rededication I would love to be able to put together a group to take to Gettysburg for the event.

As I hear more...I will post it for anyone who may be interested. I would think that an LH in conjunction would be a good time for such an event...of course I may be wrong.

The current word is that the work should start this fall....so hopefully, during Remembrance Day we may see some work being done of East Cemetary Hill.

Re: 4th Ohio Monument at East Cemetary Hill

For those of you who may be wondering what the 4th OVI monument originally looked like. Here is a link to one informational site that features an image of the original monument. All that remains on the field, as of right now, is the base.

Also, the work on the stainless steel armature for the inside of the monument has supposedly started.

Re: 4th Ohio Monument at East Cemetary Hill ( Work Has Begun)

In an effort to share to y'all.

The work on the 4th Ohio Monument has begun.
Here are some pictures from Dean Knudsen, Curator at the GNMP.

For those of you who may be interested. They are erecting a stainless steel armature inside the monument, much like the armature that supports the Statue of Liberty.

The base has had new concrete added, and one of lower stainless steel struts have been added. Work is slow as they are using a polymer to set the bolts, and it takes time for that to set up.

They are tentatively looking at Late Winter or Spring for a rededication of the monument.
