  • Raising money at events for preservation

Is it around any more? Has the economy made this impossible?

Granted, I've been inactive all year, so if it says somewhere let me know, but are there any events that are providing money to preservation and if so, let us know what the cause is for the event. I know the McDowell event will be raising money for Highland County again in 2012. Anyone else???

Seemed it was a bigger deal in the "old days".

Re: Raising money at events for preservation

Dave Bushmole has organized a fundraiser to help fund purchasing the materials for the 15th Iowa flags for the Shiloh event in March. Any proceeds left from the purchase of materials are to be donated to the Iowa Battle Flag project in order to aid in the conservation of Iowa's battle flags.

The flags spent a century in cases in the state capitol, leaning against walls and deteriorating. In the early 20th century, one of the Governor's wives attempted to "preserve" Iowa's flags by organizing groups to sew cheesecloth to the flags, stitching through the material. Sheila Hanke is now working to stabilize the flags and organize their proper storage for future generations of researchers. Unfortunately, due to budget issues in our current economic climate, Sheila no longer has an assistant and is working singlehandedly to save flags from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and the First World War.

The Iowa Battle Flag project has provided research for not only the forthcoming Shiloh event, but also the recreation of the 45th Alabama flag for last year's "Before the Breakout" event. It has been our hope to raise funds and awareness of this issue for several months now, and we hope that the success of Dave's fundraising efforts will be the first of many such fundraisers for preservation at a national and state level.

For more information about the project, please see iowaflags.org. To find out more about the Shiloh fundraiser, and to find the information about buying tickets for the raffle, please follow this link to the thread here on the AC: http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...r-Great-Prizes

Just finished reading the 150th Perryville thread and it's emphasis on preservation. Thanks to the organizers and Perryville staff that are working to make this an enjoyable and profitable (for preservation) event.

Thanks Mike for those words. The great thing about the 150th event coming up is that all your registration fees, that 100% of what you pay, will go straight to the preservation and intrepretational efforts at the Perryville Battelfield. If you cannot make it to the event and would still like to contribute to the cause there, you can do so by going to www.friendsofperryville.org.
