Thanks to the efforts of folks througout the hobby and our friends in many places, the living history community alone (us) has generated over $7500 in donations directly to the purchase of land at Mansfield. This figure is a down-payment, and does not include this next week and efforts at the event and beyond. Thanks to 3-1 matching grants from the Austin CWRT, Fed govt program and Louisiana State Govt program, we are nearly half way to the goal of raising $60,000 to buy the 60 acres easement in the CWPT Urgent Appeal. I do not know how much additional has been raised by the various CWRT's and efforts by FOM and CWPT.
Donations and support have come from all over the country, from Maine to Washington, Florida to California, Iraq and the UK. It comes from students with $5 to spare to professionals with more. It has come in the form of proclamations and resolutions from the Governor of Texas and State House and the Speaker of the Louisiana House, among others. It is a group of concerned historians, preservationists, environmentalists, national and grass roots organizations.
It has taken the form of car washes, history lectures, BBQ lunches, posters, door to door appeals, and many other techniques to raise money and awareness.
Will we stop the cranes from destroying the land? They are sufficiently concerned to have finally offerred to turn over the 41 acres promised several years ago, that will be in addition to the 60 acre easement we are raising funds for. The entire community, state and media are energized for this weekend's event like nothing Northwest Louisiana has ever seen since Banks was turned back by Taylor. It's looking pretty good so far.
The event is next weekend (April 2-4) - if anyone wants to join us or simply attend the event, we welcome you. The event itself has now been opened to walk-ons. Donations are still gratefully accepted for the raffle (via paypal only through 3/29) but more importantly:
Please join CWPT and Friends of Mansfield, because the raffles are just a tiny piece of the effort that really kicks off next weekend.
latest quotable quote: from Dan Curran of Harrisburg PA who somehow got my cell phone number and called today: "Never been to Mansfield but I just want to help somehow, a check is on the way."
Keep the faith and bless all of you who have worked so hard and supported us in any way...because as we like to say, "It's all about them, the boys in Blue and Gray."
That developer at Morris Island has no idea who he is tangling with! :wink_smil
