CVBT PRESERVES A PORTION OF JACKSON'S FLANK ATTACK AT CHANCELLORSVILLE: The Good Guys win one, and need your help.......

On May 2, 1863, approximately three miles west of a crossroads called Chancellorsville, Stonewall Jackson launched a daring attack against Federal troops of the Union XI Corps. On February 23, 2004, more than 140 years later, the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust (CVBT) is positioned to save 16.37 acres of this hallowed ground, to preserve it forever. The physical setting is a portion of the Talley Farm ridge, just south of the old Orange Turnpike (State Route 3). The purchase price was $200,000.

Because of a closing deadline, two of CVBT's Board members stepped forward and acquired the property under an agreement to sell the land to CVBT at a later date for $200,000, a transaction which was carried out with the gratefully received assistance of The National Bank of Frederickburg.

CVBT's delay in purchasing the property arose from the possible opportunity to receive a $150,000 grant. As a condition to the grant, CVBT must raise $50,000 in matching funds, and hence we are calling on all who understand what this land means to us and to our country, calling on all who have stepped forward and supported CVBT in the past, to step forward once again and be willing to help out financially. With the grant, every dollar donated to CVBT will result in 4 dollars for the purchase. Of course, while we are optimistic about obtaining the grant, it is not a given and we may have to raise the $200,000 ourselves.

CVBT has always prided itself on being able to claim that donations are used to buy dirt and grass, not to pay staff. This tradition continues. Although the CVBT now has an executive director, those personnel costs are covered by funds donated for that specific purpose. Consequently, CVBT still claims, with some pride, that donations will continue to be used for dirt and grass.

But we must act now, while the grant funds are still available. Won't you please help us by sending as generous a contribution as you can?

You can send your donation to CVBT, Box 3417, Fredericksburg, VA 22402, or you can pay through our website, www.cvbt.org. However you do so, please be as generous as you can; together, we can assure that this hallowed ground is saved, forever and for all time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Thanks for continuing to stand with CVBT as we strive to preserve this hallowed ground!

    Re: Urgent plea at Chancellorsville.....

Please consider helping the CVBT out with this purchase. On this portion of the Chancellorsville Battlefield, the National Park Service boundary is very lopsided, with the NPS owning land only on the north side of the Orange Turnpike (Route 3). The CVBT tract is located on the Talley Farm, across the road from the NPS, and was the position of Brigadier General Charles Devens' 11th Corps division. The CVBT already owns another 25-acre tract on the Talley Farm, so the purchase of this new property will go a long way towards preserving an important part of the battlefield.

According to US Census information released in 2002, Spotsylvania County is the 16th fastest growing county in the country. What isn't preserved today may be lost tomorrow. With the matching funds available, a small donation can go a long way toward helping the CVBT pay off this purchase, thus freeing them up to pursue more properties in the area.

      Re: Urgent plea at Chancellorsville.....

      All,

I was contacted by Tim Ertel of the SGLHA whose group, the Patapsco Patriots Fife and Drum Corps, are planning on trying to raise money through a Fife & Drum Muster in Ellicott City, MD in mid June. Check out the website for information at www.ecbo.org/FDMuster.html

If any musicians out there want to directly help the CVBT save this new land at Chancellorsville, you can call 410-461-1945 to register.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Good news in the paper today.....

        Preservationists buy land

        March 30, 2004 1:09 am

        By BETTY HAYDEN SNIDER
Preservationists have scored another victory in their campaign to save Civil War battlefields from development.

Two members of the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust board have purchased 16.37 acres on State Route 3 for $200,000. The land will be sold to CVBT for the same price once some grant money becomes available.

Dr. Michael Stevens, a local dermatologist and president of the trust, said the group didn't have time to think about the deal--or wait for grant money.

The tract, a portion of the Talley Farm near Laurel Hill Memorial Park, was involved in Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's famous flank attack during the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Late on the afternoon of May 2, 1863, Jackson and his men swooped around the flank of the Union line and burst through the woods with a fierce rebel yell, catching the federals off guard and keying a Confederate victory.

Jackson, however, was wounded by friendly fire and later died.

Stevens called the attack "one of the most important moments in the history of America."

Spotsylvania County Supervisors Chairman Bob Hagan said he is pleased that the deal will "preserve land, not only for the county, but the nation at large."

The CVBT is hoping to receive $150,000 in federal transportation grant money. The Civil War Preservation Trust, a national group, will contribute $25,000, and the CVBT will come up with the rest.
[This means that the CVBT only has to raise $25,000 instead of the $50,000]:D

Supervisors gave their blessing to preservationists seeking such grants a couple of years ago.

Supervisor Hap Connors, an outspoken preservationist, applauded the private-public cooperation.

"It's a case where government can serve as a catalyst and make it easier for the private sector to do these types of things," he said.

Preserving battlefield land is "a good thing for the county and can help boost our tourism efforts," Connors said.

Stevens said the CVBT is excited about its latest purchase. Since the trust formed in the Fredericksburg area in 1996, it has preserved more than 200 acres.

"This is local folks trying to preserve hallowed ground in the community," he said. "We can't save everything, but there's still the opportunity to save significant land."
