MORRIS ISLAND NEEDS YOUR HELP!
On April 6th, the Town of James Island will discuss whether or not to officially oppose the development proposal of Morris Island. Please attend this meeting. It will be at James Island Town Hall on April 6 at 7 pm. James Island Town Hall is located at 1246 Camp Road. The agenda will be online tomorrow at www.townofjamesisland.org. Public comment will be allowed at the beginning of the meeting.
In the meantime, we need you to call the Town Council members and Mayor of James Island and let them know that you oppose the development of Morris Island. Even if you are planning on attending the Town Council meeting it is very important that you place these calls. Public comment will be allowed at the beginning of the meeting. It doesn't matter who you are or where you are from, they need to hear from all of us! Urge them to pass a resolution on April 6 opposing the development proposal. Even though the development proposal will be submitted Charleston County, a resolution passed by a local governing body within the County will send a strong message to County Council representatives who will be deciding whether or not to allow a development that is 10 times the number of units that is currently allowed on the island.
Some talking points for your comments during the public comment segment of the meeting or for talking to James Island Town Council Members may include:
* Morris Island is an ecologically sensitive barrier island that is prone to erosion. Supporting a development of 20 homes on such a sensitive site would be a fiscally and environmentally irresponsible move.
* Morris Island is a historically sensitive landmark in Charleston County. Supporting a development of 20 homes would be disrespectful of the men and women who gave their lives for their country.
* Morris Island is in direct view of Fort Sumter. Twenty new homes on Morris Island would interfere with the historical experience of hundreds of thousands of people who visit Fort Sumter and contribute to our economy every year.
* Morris Island is one of the only undisturbed resting grounds in the Charleston Harbor for migratory shorebirds who travel through the Charleston area every year.
* Morris Island should be protected from a 20 home development because it is an important place to many people in the Charleston Area. There is a coalition in existence that is made up of representatives from Universities, Environmental Groups, the Federal Government, Historical Societies and Civil War Reenactors. The Coalition has more than 600 members. The preservation of Morris Island is an important issue and all local governments should take a stand in the name of their citizens.
Please make these calls and plan on attending this meeting. This issue is so important to so many in Charleston County. All local municipalities need to hear your thoughts on this development proposal.
