  • 24th Virginia Infantry Flag Restoration Efforts Completed

With Appomattox approaching, I thought I would give a long overdue update.

Five years ago our group sponsored a 47 mile march from Sayler's Creek to Appomattox C.H. as part of our effort to raise funds for the restoration of the 24th Virginia's Battle Flag. The flag is part of the Museum of the Confederacy's collection (MOC # WD 341) and was captured at Sayler's Creek. This flag was one of only two of Pickett's Division to make the trip to the angle and avoid being captured at Gettysburg. The restoration cost was in excess of $20,000 and through a lot of hard work and dedication over the last several years, that goal was met approximately six months ago.

The restoration work is currently underway and we hope it will be completed by April. If it is done in time, there is a chance the flag will be put on display at the MOC annex in Appomattox during the 150th.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the effort and especially those of you who completed the march and raised money via pledges for every mile. Special thanks to Randy Ubben and Greg Starbuck who both graciously donated items to help raise funds as part of the march.

      Thanks Tyler,

It was the culmination of a lot of hard work by many dedicated individuals.

The other flag to avoid capture in the aftermath of Pickett's charge was that of the 11th Va. The 11th and 24th were on Kemper's right. The 11th's flag was captured during Five Forks and is also part of the MOC's collection (MOC # WD 322)

The 11th Va are currently trying to raise money to preserve this flag. I'm sure they would appreciate any assistance in doing so if anyone is looking to make a donation to the MOC anyway.
