  • We owe a special debt on Morris Island.

Stay in the battle. We must not lose.
    I found this last night:

When friends appoached Francis Shaw about helping recover the gallant Robert
Gould Shaw's body from its grave on Morris Island, Colonel Shaw's father wrote
the Federal commander Gen Quincy Gilmore:

"I take the liberty to address you because I am informed that efforts are being
made to recover the body of my son, which was buried at Fort Wagner. My object
in writing is to say that such efforts are not authorized by me or my family,
and they are not approved by us. We hold that a soldier's most appropriate
burial-place is the field where he has fallen. I shall therefore be much
obliged, General, if in case this matter is brought to your cognizance, you will
forbid the desecration of my son's grave, and prevent the disturbance of his
remains or those buried with him."

I would add this postcript. Amen, Mr Shaw. We shall endeavour to protect all the soldiers' countless resting places on Morris Island.

    Cordially,
Your comrade in defense of Morris Island,

Good job Keith, this is the best post I have seen on this topic and forum yet.

      Keith,

I'd been trying to put my words on paper for the Council meeting tonight. Now I know what I'm going to say.

      Thank you.
