To everyone who wrote letters and sent emails to Mayor Clark and members of James Island Town Council asking them to oppose the developer's plan for Morris Island, and to those who attended last night's Council meeting, thank you! I cannot adequately put into words how much we needed your help, and how much it was appreciated.
We were extremely worried about last night's vote. Mayor Clark said she's received hundreds of letters and emails from all over the country, and I'm sure this sent a strong message to the Mayor and Council that Morris Island must be protected.
The huge crowd included two candidates for the SC Senate - Henry Fishburne and Chip Campsen. Both spoke in opposition to the development plan, and offered to help us with the battle. All 3 local network TV channels covered the meeting --- Channel 5 did a live feed during the 6:00 news, and interviewed the re-enactors in attendance. And the guys did a great job! Speeches from members of the 27th South Carolina and 54th Massachusetts actually brought tears to the eyes of the audience.
It's not over yet. We are going to ask every municipality in Charleston County to pass a resolution opposing the development. And at some point, the developer will ask Charleston County Council to rezone the island. So we may need your help again to ensure that Morris Island is preserved in perpetuity for those who fought and died there.
Together we can save Morris Island!
