  • Civil War Trust - Protecting America's War Memorials - PLEASE READ!

Right now, monuments, memorials, markers, and plaques that relate to Confederate veterans, notable figures, and events are being subjected to an unusually high level of scrutiny in the general public. Town councils, county boards, and university officials are advancing proposals to remove these items from public spaces, and many of these measures are passing, sometimes unanimously, and with little or no debate.

While some of us are professional historians, most of us are not (myself included). However, those of us in the living history hobbies of various time-periods spend a great deal of time learning about the lives of those who lived the events we portray. We read their books, letters, and journals and get to know them. This gives us a much richer context to ponder the events and people of the past, which is why I am sure that many of you, like me, find the recent reaction toward these memorials unsettling.

The Civil War Trust evidently agrees.
They have started a petition to urge leaders in Congress to move to protect the nation's war memorials. Please have a look here:

Re: Civil War Trust - Protecting America's War Memorials - PLEASE READ!

I realize that not everyone is able to provide a monetary contribution to battlefield preservation, or is within a reasonable distance to volunteer their time with the NPS. But now is the chance for everyone to do their part in aiding in the preservation of our endangered heritage.

The very possibility of totally erasing the memory of what our ancestors did is on the horizon. It is up to folks like us to prevent this from happening, continue teaching people through historical interpretation and above all else, saving our past for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

With that I am begging all of you; please take five minutes to read and sign this petition!

Thanks Wick! I truly appreciate you taking the time to post this and help spread the word.

I just submitted mine. I truly hope this has an impact because I would agree that we are entering a slippery slope with the decisions and interest in wiping away a large part of our history.

It is a shame the lengths we have to go through for this. It kills me that knee jerk reactions are erasing our history. Great cause and I hope it helps out!

Just signed and shared this petition within my reenacting communities. These monuments are for the men who fought and died in that terrible conflict, and it is the gallant fallen who inspire all of us to portray and honor the men of both sides of the war. It was one of the darkest times of our history and we can never just "forget it". CivilWarHistoryMatters!
