  • News from the Morris Island battlefront

    Folks,
    Here's the latest. Note: We expect this action within the Charleston CITY council to go well and very likely unanimously against Morris Island's development. The mayor is solidly on our side too! Therefore, we aren't beating the long roll and calling for action. You who have helped deluge local decisionmakers with e-mail and letters have been fighting the good fight, and are making a HUGE difference in this fight.

    That said, we know we'll likely next need to "release the hounds" :wink_smil when this issue is taken up by the Charleston COUNTY council -- which appears to be more of a crapshoot -- like the James Island city council was, until you weighted in! The county may not take it up for some time.

    We are picking our battles and don't want any of our preservation warriors to feel "activist fatigue." Rest assured, we've got folks at every level who are watching every move the developer makes and they will remain vigilant. Stay tuned and keep your swords (and pens) bright!

    Now, here's the news:

    Charleston City Councilman Henry Fishburne will introduce a resolution to oppose any development beyond current standards on Morris Island at the April 13th City of Charleston Council meeting. Councilman Fishburne is following the lead of James Island Town Councilman Joe Qualey who introduced a similar resolution in the James Island Town Council last week.

    "I believe that Morris Island is hallowed ground and should not be developed. The area was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War and is the final resting place for thousands of soldiers from both sides. Developing the area would be disrespectful to their memory," Councilman Fishburne stated. "Morris Island must be preserved and I will work with Councilman Qualey, the Morris Island Coalition and others to protect it."

    The meeting is at 5 pm at Charleston City Hall, 80 Broad Street. Please attend to show your support for this resolution.

    Morris Island Resolution

    "Whereas, Morris Island is a historically significant landmark in
    Charleston County;
    Whereas, Morris Island was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of
    the Civil War with thousands of lives lost on both sides;
    Whereas, Morris Island is an ecologically sensitive barrier island;
    Whereas, Morris Island is an undisturbed resting place for migratory
    shorebirds;
    Whereas, Charleston County has designated the island as a resource
    management area and has zoned it appropriately;
    Whereas any development beyond what it is currently zoned for would
    jeopardize the historical and cultural character and the islands
    sensitive ecosystem;
    We, the City Council of the City of Charleston, hereby resolves to
    oppose any development proposals or actions that would lead to
    development beyond the resource management development standards as laid in the Charleston County Comprehensive Plan".
