"Acclaimed historian and World War II veteran Edwin Cole Bearss is being considered for the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest honors Congress can bestow on an American. Will you please join us in support of legislation that would confer this distinction on Ed, one of the legends of the battlefield preservation movement?
Short of Lee, Grant, Jackson and Sherman, few names in the study of the Civil War echo as loudly as Bearss. With his booming voice and encyclopedic knowledge of military history, Ed Bearss, chief historian emeritus of the National Park Service, has been called a living national treasure by the Smithsonian. He has received virtually every award in the field of historical study.
Thanks to legislation introduced in Congress by U.S. Representative Gerald Connolly, and co-sponsored by more than 110 other lawmakers, Bearss could receive the Congressional Gold Medal in the near future. The bill, H.R. 2059, has been referred to the House Financial Services Committee for consideration.
Please sign your name to this petition, urging Congress to enact this legislation before Congress adjourns in 2016. We can think of no more fitting tribute to this living legend than bestowal of the Congressional Gold Medal."
