  • Ohio Historical Marker| 76th Ovi

    Hello all,

I was curious to know if anyone has any experience in acquiring an "Ohio Historical Marker" for a location. My unit "76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry" were planning on getting one at the Newark earth works in Newark, Ohio. The earthworks have a very unique past that the general public is unaware of. The earthworks were created by the ancient "Hopewell" tribe and in the 1800s, the location was known as "Camp Sherman" and it was used to muster in the 76th Ohio into service in the year of 1861. After the war, to my understanding, the location was used as a fairground.

If anyone happens to know how to get a marker or how much it would cost, would be greatly appreciated.

Daniel, when I was president of my historical society, we had to submit an application for them marker through the state. This was 1999, so I'm sorry I cannot remember "where" it went to. I know it took quite a while to get multiple approvals and such. It was for the WLW tower in Mason, Ohio, but we got it and it was not cheap. I believe in the 2K range at that time. BTW, I've done the Newark event more time than I can count. I understand it doesn't happen anymore.

Yeah, I believe you're thinking of the Granville event (10 minutes from Newark). To my understanding, that was before I got into the hobby. Ill contact the Ohio Historical Society to see if I can get something done!
