It’s looking more likely that the Civil War museum proposed for Fayetteville will be built, and that Fayetteville State University will get a new fitness center.
State House budget documents released this past week include money for both projects plus money for the Fayetteville Regional Airport.
The House is expected to reveal and approve a complete version of its proposed 2017 to 2019 North Carolina budget in the upcoming week. Then the state House and Senate will work on a compromise among themselves. The Senate previously proposed spending $22.9 billion in fiscal 2017-18 and $23.4 billion in 2018-19.
Below are some items of interest to the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg area that have surfaced so far.
Civil War museum
Local boosters asked the state to contribute $30 million to the proposed $65 million North Carolina Civil War History Center. It would be built on Arsenal Avenue near the Museum of the Cape Fear and the E.A. Poe House.
The Senate budget had no money for it. The House budget has $500,000 in planning funds for the transition of the Museum of the Cape Fear into the Civil War History Center. The $500,000 is a far cry from $30 million, but it signals that the legislature is interested in the project.
