From the American Battlefield Trust - Save 81 Acres at Cold Harbor
Thanks to the untiring support and incredible generosity of our members, we recently preserved two key tracts of land at Cold Harbor.
This is no time to rest on our laurels, however. We need to keep the momentum going!
In addition to the three other tracts we’re still fighting to save, we’ve added a new 28-acre target property. This land is hallowed indeed.
Historian Robert E.L. Krick says that on June 3, 1864, “John Gibbon’s Federal division, specifically Tyler’s gigantic all-New York brigade, attacked toward this spot. The 8th New York Heavy Artillery famously spearheaded that effort. The regiment was employed that morning as infantry. It was crushed, losing an incredible 475 men killed and wounded.”
Remarkably, this tract also includes land over which Gen. Robert E. Lee’s men attacked the Army of the Potomac at Gaines’ Mill in 1862!
Together, we have a chance to preserve land that played a key role in two different Civil War battles. This is a rare opportunity!
