Economist to Speak at Public Meeting on Economics of Historic Preservation
In honor of National Historic Preservation Week (May 3-9, 2004), the City of Franklin would like to announce a public presentation by renowned economist Donovan Rypkema on Tuesday, May 18, at 5:30 PM. Rypkema will discuss the economic benefits of historic preservation and describe how historic preservation and rehabilitation can increase property values. The presentation will be held in the Police Training Room at City Hall. Donovan Rypkema is principal of Place Economics, a Washington D.C. based company and is a real estate development consultant specializing in feasibility analyses for real estate acquisition and development, economic revitalization of downtowns and neighborhood commercial centers, and rehabilitation of historic structures. He is the author of The Economics of Rehabilitation, Community Initiated Development, The Downtown Real Estate Development Series and The Investor Looks at an Historic Building. He has produced statewide studies of the economic impact of historic preservation in several states including New York, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. “Mr. Rypkema will provide insight into the economic benefits of historic preservation for Franklin and also explain how historic buildings can leverage greater economic benefits based on his extensive experience,” stated Shanon Wasielewski, City Preservation Planner.
