  • Which battlefield first?

Which battlefields on the CWPT's list of endangered list for 2004 should be the focus of our preservation drive first?

We could send the money to CWPT or an area preservation organization. Either way, you would make your check out to the preservation organization and retain the tax benefit for donating to a charitable organization.

I would definitely put Glorietta, NM on my list as the most endangered western battlefield. At least it still has something left to preserve.

      Rob,

There are numerous endangered battlefields that don't appear on this list. This is the CWPT's 10 most endangered for 2004. I thought we needed a starting point. At some point, I would like to take nominations if this program is adopted.

        Dusty,

        CWPT's website
        http://www.civilwar.org/landpreserva...ancellorsville
has information about an $8 to $1 matching funds opportunity that is open for 60 days for Chancellorsville. No dates are mentioned, so it is important to act as quickly as possible.

Bentonville, NC has $6 to $1 funds.

Fort Donelson is $1 for $ matching funds also.

It makes sense to maximize these opportunities to multiply donated funds.

        Keep fighting the good fight!

          Re: Which battlefield first?

Great idea Dusty. It is important to pick from the top 10 because of the synergy we create by supporting a nationally recognized list. I tend to support those efforts that can do the most good and battlefields under the most immediate threat.

Franklin is a case in point - a battle mostly lost by us before we ever got a chance to serve...but this may actually help save what's left. But we gotta move quick. My heart belongs to Mansfield but my brain says: we have a narrow window at Franklin around a 140th Anniversary event - lets go for it.

The Chancellorsville match is a no-brainer and qualifies as doing the most good and immediate threat/opportunity.

What do you make of this?

            I need your opinions.

This post has received over 200 hits and 46 "votes"

Phil Campbell's post on driving distances has had over 400 hits and 100 "votes"

Is it worth setting this A/C preservation project up if we can't get 50 people involved????????:( :( :(

Well, this is depressing. 2,168 members- it shouldn't be this hard to get 50, even 100 to vote. Aren't people here supposed to care?

I just donated! Let's get busy! Even 5 or 10 bucks with the matching funds goes a long way!

Thank you all for your responses. As many of you have already heard, I have decided to start the preservation drive with the two most popular sites selected in this poll, Chancellorsville and Franklin.

I hope a majority of the respondents will be able to send in a donation for one or both of these worthy causes.......
