I received this email this morning from the CWPT and thought I'd pass it along to those who are not on their electronic mailing list.
Dear Fellow Preservationists,
You may have already been asked to sign the "Citizens' Petition in Favor of Civil War Battlefield Preservation." If you have not, however, we would like you to keep reading to learn about our urgent request.
Today, by immediately printing and signing your name on the attached document (readable in Adobe Reader)- a Citizens' Petition to several of our elected leaders in Congress - you can help save at least 2,700 acres of Civil War battlefield land in the next year.
More of America's battlefields are threatened by development or destruction than ever before.
And while you have helped save over 18,000 acres, we are running out of time to save the remaining battlefield land that we must preserve to adequately tell the full story of the American Civil War.
You have a chance to take battlefield preservation to a whole new level, just in time. In the 2005 budget, President Bush has asked Congress to appropriate $5 million in matching funds for the Civil War Battlefield Protection Program.
This $5 million matching grant would be the single largest one-year appropriation for battlefield preservation in our nation's history!
Before even a penny of these funds is made available to match our dollars to save battlefields, Congress must approve this budget request. They could take one of several actions:
1) They could approve the president's full request, and appropriate all $5 million, or even add more to it (obviously, this is the outcome we want to happen).
2) They could approve an amount less than the president's request (in which case, we will still count ourselves fortunate, although slightly disappointed).
3) They could "zero out" the president's request, leaving America's Civil War battlefields high and dry in 2005 (the worst possible outcome).
That's where your Citizens' Petition (attached) comes in. Addressed to the most influential lawmakers who control the appropriations process, this petition asks them to fully fund the president's request and make the full $5 million available for battlefield preservation.
Please sign it and return it as soon as possible. If you can get friends and family to sign it, please do, but please make sure it is returned no later than June 10th! The petitions may be mailed to:
