SHILOH, Tenn. -- The nation’s largest battlefield preservation organization is playing a vital role in ensuring the site of one of America’s bloodiest battles will be preserved for the education of future generations.
The Civil War Preservation Trust recently acquired an additional 7.1 acres of land near Shiloh National Military Park. The acquisition is the latest in a series of purchase by the trust aimed at adding to the park and helping to preserve the battlefield.
“They have been extremely helpful,” said park superintendent Woody Harrell.
The superintendent said the most recent land purchase is in the southeastern corner of the park and helps preserve an area which served as the initial position for generals Jackson and Chalmers as they pushed toward Pittsburg Landing in the early stages of the battle.
“Any time we can get any of that early land out there, we’re tickled about it from a historical perspective,” said Harrell.
The park service would eventually like to protect the entire area encompassing the primary battlefield known as Shiloh Hill.
“We have set as a goal to gain as much of Shiloh Hill as possible,” said Harrell.
