  • Items for sale to benefit ACPP

Forum member Kathy Bradford has three items that she would like to sell with all proceeds going to the ACPP project to benefit CVBT. See description below on a housewife, sleeping cap and toiletry kit. Please contact Kathy at: davidbradford@juno.com if you are interested in the items. Pictures are available from me at dustyswb@comcast.net.

    Confederate Housewife $30.00

Every stitch is hand sewn with cotton, linen, and silk thread. The needle case has a pocket for thread winders, etc., and it may be removed, stocked with all the necessary items, and used for long marches where every inch and ounce matter. Upon request and additional $5 donation, your initial will be embroidered on the needle case using Godey’s pattern.

Materials: wool (FHW and red flannel that was intended for a young lady's petticoat), cotton, organdy, canvas, twill, silk thread (used for all embroidery), 100% non-mercerized cotton thread (used for all sewing), cotton twill tape binding and ties.

Stocked with: lump of raw beeswax wrapped in cotton, hank of hemp cord glass, antique bone, and paper-backed tin buttons, threaded needles, black glass head pins, pasteboard thread winders with all thread drawn through beeswax, FHW logwood dyed cotton, FHW natural linen, non-mercerized black cotton, patch fabric (FHW jean, FHW fatigue blouse wool, Osnaburg)

    Sleeping cap $45.00

Completely hand-sewn and topstitched with non-mercerized cotton thread, wool lined with cotton, wool tassel, fits head sizes 23"-24"

Be prepared for the discomforts the soldiers faced with a Comfort and Necessary Kit $25.00

Embroidered needle book: FHW wool, silk and cotton embroidery, original bone and paper backed tin button, needles threaded with waxed thread, glass head pins.

Pasteboard thread winder with thread drawn through beeswax, FHW logwood dyed cotton, FHW natural linen, non-mercerized black cotton.

16”x 24” huckabuck towel: hand-hemmed with 10 stitches to the inch Godey’s pattern initial embroidered upon request for an additional $5 donation.

Lye soap in hand-sewn FHW cloth bag, double wrapped in authentic waxed paper made with real beeswax (you can still smell the honey), Boston Indexical Soap Company label (Boston Indexical Soap Company was one of two commercial soap manufacturers that were in operation during the War listed in a book owned by Bob Sullivan). Wrapper is closed with beeswax. To reseal, press closed. To treat poison ivy, make a stiff lather, and let it dry on affected skin.

Unbleached Muslin “necessary cloths” pre-washed for softness

Cornstarch bag (one hand-sewn bag inside a second one to prevent spillage): Cornstarch has long been used as powder to prevent chafing and absorb sweat. Simply pat the inner bag of cornstarch against your skin and feel relief from chafing. The cornstarch will be dispensed through the pores of the muslin. Store in the second hand-sewn bag.

2 hanks of hemp twine in two thick nesses (handyman’s friend of the 1800’s)

    All neatly fit in a 6”x 9” hand-sewn bag

I second that thanks. Chancellorsville has $8 to $1 matching funds right now, and your generous contributions will have a powerful influence. Attached are photos so you know what will be coming your way.

Dusty, one forum member who is very much appreciated for his efforts to preserve Mansfield has requested a second kit. Look for a larger check than you expected, and thank you for all you're doing to keep preservation at the forefront of this forum.

          With sincere appreciation,

Thank you for your kind words and interest, Ron (and all who sent private messages and e-mails). If it is okay with the moderators and Paul, there may be more things like this in the future.

A huge thanks to all who are contributing to the preservation of Franklin and Chancellorsville.

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend honoring and remembering those who've sacrificed for the liberty and independence we enjoy in our great nation.

                    From Kathy.....

                    Hi, Dusty,

That was quick. It's so encouraging that bit by bit, preservation seems to be gaining ground - literally.

                    The items went to:

                    Garrison Beall - housewife

                    Chris Curtis - kit

Doug Cooper - sleeping cap and second kit

I'll send you a check as soon as I receive money from them.

Thank you so much for making this possible. You spent a lot of time contacting people and helping me. I really appreciate all you've done.

How fitting to spend Memorial Day weekend preserving the ground on which they fought!

                    With much appreciation,

                    Kathy

I'm very glad that there was so much interest in Kathy's items. Seems the happy customers like giving, as they have also contributed directly to the cause with direct donations.

The drive continues. Can you spare $5?????

Re: Items for sale to benefit ACPP

I received my housewife today and I surely got the best deal of all the parties involved.

Kathy did all the hard work and all I had to do was run to the mailbox.

Thank you. I could not be happier.

Glad you are happy with your purchase. Kathy was very generous to help the ACPP with her workmanship.

                          Garrison,

I'm so glad you're pleased. You did much more than run to the mailbox, though. Because of your contribution, the matching funds, and Doug and Dusty's generous challenges, your contribution multiplied to preserve a precious piece of history. Knowing how much you value preservation, thank you for working to make sure that the battlefields ultimately get "the best deal of all the parties involved."
