  • The Port Republic and Cross keys battle heats up!

To Arms! This is a high priority in the fight against VDOT in the Port Republic and Cross Keys loop road battle. Here's the deal! On Thursday, July 22nd at Turner Ashby High School in Bridgewater, VA from 4pm-8pm V-DOT will be hearing the public on a loop road that runs right down the middle of Cross Key's battlefield. Scoping is V-Dot's term for a location study impact session. It's purpose is to allow citizens the oppurtunity to tell VDOT about issues specific to the southern by pass corridor as the loop road, by pass, beltway, etc. is now called. It seems that V-DOT thought that this issue has gone away from the public. They are definetly wrong! I ask all fewllow preservationist in the area to go to this meeting to express your anger at this issue. This has been a hot bed in this area for years. There are 2 issues with the locals. On one hand the preservationist want to save the battlefield. On the other hand the local residents want to keep the land to farm and keep the country from becoming another city. If you would like to attend let me know! Let's show V-DOT we are dead serious in saving this land. Respectfully, Cpl Dan Morgan 10thVA(IVR) :baring_te

    Dan,

Last Friday, I was out in your neck of the woods. I had a meeting in Harrisonburg and while there a fellow handed me a copy of the Cross Keys and Port Republic Battlefields Preservation Plan (2003) , prepared for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF). I mention this just in case you aren't already aware of it. It sums up nicely what the SVBF hopes to accomplish at these battlefields and how. Parcel identification, preservation priorities, preservation tools and techniques are just some of the topics covered. If you don't already have a copy, perhaps the SVBF has some extras.
