  • Fantastic development in the Morris Island fight!

    Folks,
This just rec'd from Mr. Blake Hallman, leader of the Morris Island Coalition.
As you can read below, we've won a major battle. Now we must rally the funds to protect one of America's single most important pieces of hallowed ground. On that day, we can declare complete victory!

    Blake's note follows:

Dear Morris Island Coalition members and supporters,

I met with the proposed developer, Harry Huffman last Wednesday; he is interested in selling the Morris Island Coalition the island. I am going to collect all of the information that I can regarding land negotiation, appraisers, and his past dealing with the Trust for Public Land. After that, I recommend the we have a meeting to discuss the issue.

When we met, he told me that we had made it such an emotional issue that he was having a tough time continuing the project, and thus preferred to pursue different options. Congratulations! You all helped to complete the first part and are well on your way to completing the second goal of our mission statement.

I hope that everyone takes a moment to reflect on what has transpired as well as how far we have come.

I offer all of you my thanks.

    More to come,

    Blake Hallman
    Morris Island Coalition
We'll keep you posted. Always remember, many of you are precisely the folks who, to use Mr Huffman's words: "made it such an emotional issue that he was having a tough time continuing the project, and thus preferred to pursue different options."

    Cordially,

        Keith,

Great news, indeed. Taking a lesson from the AOT, and realizing a partial victory needs a good strong follow up, what then is the next logical step in this process to "rally the funds?" Don't let this lose momentum, and I know I don't have to say this, but it would be a real shame for this land to get "flipped" to just another developer who has deeper pockets before the preservationists and environmentalists can close the deal.

        Outline the next step, please.

          Sounds like another grassroots victory.

Let us know what we can do next.

            Folks,
Suffice to say, the way ahead is filled with potential pitalls and will be a very complicated process indeed. That said, the Morris Island Coalition is going to work now in order to develop a strategy with the ultimate goal of placing MI in public trust. Once the way ahead is mapped, taking into account the expert opinions of preservation specialists, we'll be able to share how individuals can help. Stay tuned and check the Morris Island Coalition website for updates. I'll do what I can to ensure the living history community stays "in the loop."
