Today, thanks to Doug Cooper's generosity, I had the pleasure of receiving the magazine for CWPT members, Hallowed Ground. Our very own Dusty Chapman has a great article describing how efforts by reenactors have raised considerable funds for preservation. In 2003, $40,200 was raised through Neshaminy, McDowell (Co. K, 37th VA), Antietam (Columbia Rifles), Franklin (Western Independent Grays), Central Virginia Battlefields Trust (CVBT), Richmond Battlefields Association "War on the James", a November Preservation March, and Lookout Mountain (149th NY). The opposite page has an article about the nearly $11,000 raised through reenactor and vendor efforts at Mansfield. Matching funds at several of these sites dramatically increases the total amounts going to preserve precious land.
Much is being accomplished; much more needs to be done - and swiftly. When it's razed/dozed/paved, it's gone...
