Sept. 26, 2006--On Saturday, September 30, 2006, at 9:00 a.m., local volunteers will roll up their sleeves and devote their morning to help improve the cultural landscape on the Chickamauga Battlefield as part of the 13th annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD). Acting Superintendent Eric Smith announced that Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will be one of the 800 sites nationwide that will participate in this country’s largest single-day volunteer effort for America’s public lands.
“Thousands of volunteers will prove on National Public Lands Day how much they care about their irreplaceable public places,” said Robb Hampton, director of National Public Lands Day. “Each year, more and more Americans come out to lend a hand on this special Saturday in September, and we invite all of you to join us.”
Volunteers who work at a site managed by any of five federal agencies will be rewarded with a free entry day during the next year at any public land site managed by those agencies: Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and USDA Forest Service. For more information, see a listing of NPLD sites, activities, contacts, as well as downloadable photos from past events on www.npld.com, or call 1-800-VOL-TEER (800-865-8337).
If you are interested in helping out, please meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. Work projects include: removing a non-historical fence located near the Snodgrass House, sorting fence rails at the Maintenance Complex, and improving the historic fence around the Brotherton House.
