  • New Interior Secretary and CWPT

Gang, Dirk Kempthorne, new Interior Secretary, is already having a positive effect on battlefield preservation. As Governor of Idaho, he was known as a CW buff and very interested in preservation. He also reportedly kept an ancestor's uniform in his office. He even yanked the lanyard of one of our two original Napoleons in the Idaho Historical Museum during a demonstration. This is great news for CWPT, us and the country.

(Fredericksburg, Va., 10/12/2006) – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will be the keynote speaker at a news conference to promote battlefield preservation on Monday, October 16, 2006. The news conference, hosted by the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT), will be held at the historic Slaughter Pen Farm on the Fredericksburg Battlefield.

Joining Secretary Kempthorne at the news conference will be CWPT President James Lighthizer, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Bill Howell, and other state and local dignitaries.

The purpose of the news conference is to celebrate the most expensive private battlefield acquisition project in history: the $12 million purchase of the Slaughter Pen Farm. The event will highlight how private fundraising efforts, combined with grants from federal and state government sources, came together to rescue this extraordinary historic resource.

The news conference will be held at 10:45 a.m. on the Slaughter Pen Farm property along Tidewater Trail (Route 2) south of Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, Va. Following the news conference, noted historian Frank O’Reilly will conduct a public tour of the 208-acre property.
