As a follow-on from Chris Daley's post and others, this is from Jim Lighthizer (the boss) at CWPT
Dear Friends of Preservation:
It is the holiday season, one of the happiest and busiest times of the year, when thoughts naturally turn toward gatherings of friends and family.
Unfortunately, the holiday season is also when the powers that be in Pennsylvania have decided to hold the final public hearing – and final vote – on the proposed Gettysburg slots parlor. No doubt, they expect preservationists and history buffs such as us to be too busy during the holidays to pay attention to this insult to our nation’s Civil War heritage. Let’s prove them wrong.
Further, I have spoken to many who think there is no need to get involved because they trust the conventional wisdom – that no responsible public official could vote for a slots parlor so close to hallowed ground. I am writing to tell you that this vote has little to do with serious analysis – it is about big bucks and political horse trading, pure and simple. As the situation stands right now, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board may very well vote to approve a Gettysburg slots parlor on December 20.
However, it is not too late to get involved. The Civil War Preservation Trust is working with an alliance of local, state and national groups called the “Stop the Slots” Coalition in an effort to stop this travesty. But, if we are going to succeed, we urgently need your assistance in the next few weeks. Here is how you can help:
Write a Letter to the Gaming Control Board
It’s simple! Just visit the CWPT Political Action Center and send a letter to the Gaming Control Board. You can modify the sample letter quickly and easily:
Attend the Public Hearing and the Final Vote
The last public hearing about the Gettysburg casino is scheduled for December 13. The vote will be one week later, on December 20. Please consider attending one or both meetings to demonstrate your opposition to slots at Gettysburg. For more information (and to keep track of frequent date and time changes by the Gaming Control Board), visit:
Contact the Media
Please consider writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper (especially if you are from Pennsylvania), or calling a talk radio program to voice your concern about gambling at Gettysburg. For more information about how to do so, contact CWPT Grassroots Associate Mary Goundrey at mgoundrey@civilwar.org.
In the coming weeks, you will be hearing from me and the CWPT staff about other ways you can help us stop the Gettysburg slots. I hope you will take a few moments out of your busy holiday schedule to make a difference in this national effort. Consider it a gift to those whose blood was shed on the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg.
Thank you for your support. Let’s make this a happy holiday for the most famous battlefield in America!
Sincerely,
Jim Lighthizer, President
